Relaxed Pup

In light of the recent surge in popularity and widespread discussions around supportive medicines, including the likes of CBD products, there has been extensive research and debate around the topic.

Whilst most people are likely to be aware on some level that CBD can provide health benefits, such as pain relief, an accompaniment for medicinal treatment or as a pain and ache relief aid, many people are still unaware that CBD can help more than just humans.

Animals suffer from many of the same things that humans use CBD for. In light of this, it is somewhat unsurprising to see a growing range of products designed specifically for animal use and consumption, although ordinary CBD products can also be used provided the correct dosage and administration methods are followed.

Research for Animal CBD Treatments

Despite this growing movement of CBD animal treatments, research on this front is still a long way behind research for human treatments. Although the limited animal tests so far have been conducted on rats and humans, it is worth taking note that felines, canines and humans have similarities when it comes to their immune systems and responses. The same can also be said for neurological pathways and organ function. This allows us an insight (albeit limited) into academic studies of CBD for animals.

Any pet owner knows how scary introducing a new medication can be for their pet; after all most people agree that a pet is as much a part of their family as a human. For this reason, it is crucial that pet owners looking to use and administer CBD products to their pets stay up to date on the latest research and always consult a trusted, professional veterinarian.

Remember – You Know Your Animal

As most professionals and respectable CBD retailers would agree, it is important to monitor your animal’s behaviour and physiological appearance when using a medicine. In light of noticing any of the side effects of CBD oil symptoms such as significant fatigue or prolonged periods of exhaustion, reduced paw and eye coordination, lower levels of salivation and the oral area becoming dry in general, you should immediately consult your veterinarian and follow their advice.

This said, it is important to note that CBD can and frequently does have a calming effect on behaviour and neural activity, for both humans and animals. Whilst this may be desired for supporting the management of anxiety and hyperactivity, it is important to establish where lethargic behaviour is more than just the correct and expected reaction to the CBD product. Kristen Levine has more on the calming effect of CBD products. You know your animal’s characteristics and should always trust your instinct if you feel something is not quite right.

Of course, all of this is a lot to take in. How can you shop for CBD products for your pet and be sure that what you are buying is safe, legal and will actually do what it is you are buying the product for?

Look For A Reputable Seller

The most important thing to look out for when buying CBD products for your pets is only using trusted retailers who are open and honest about their products. If a seller’s description seems vague, you should be asking why that is. CBD products are not dangerous or illegal provided they meet the required standards regarding THC levels – the chemical responsible for the notoriety behind CBD found most commonly in high levels in marijuana. A reputable retailer will be up front and open about the products they are selling and will be only too happy to answer any questions you have regarding extraction of CBD and the refinement process for the particular product.
